Persephone, also known as Kore, is the daughter of the agriculture goddess Demeter. While picking flowers in a field one day, she was kidnapped by Haides, the lord of the dead. After eating the jewel-fruited pomegranate, Persephone doomed herself to spending half a year in the Underworld as queen of the dead.
